Method and sources
  • Historical state winners and official electoral-vote totals were checked against the U.S. National Archives Electoral College record. Popular-vote percentages are rounded to one decimal place.
  • Geography uses U.S. Census state boundaries in an Albers USA projection. The nine smallest eastern jurisdictions appear as squares beside the map for legibility.
  • Maine and Nebraska can split electoral votes by congressional district. Split results are noted in the election commentary; the state map itself shows the statewide winner.
  • “Build 2028” uses the 2020 Census apportionment. Its starting ratings are an illustrative historical baseline—not a poll average, prediction, or endorsement. Leaning states count toward a party; 270 wins, while 269–269 sends the election to the U.S. House.
  • The state briefing ranks relative attention, not the probability that a party wins. The 2028 indicator uses each state’s partisan split across the five most recent presidential elections. The 2026 indicator adds weight where a regularly scheduled U.S. Senate election occurs. Scores are a transparent historical screen, not polling or race ratings.
  • State headlines are refreshed on demand at most every 30 minutes from a Google News RSS search and link to the originating coverage. Placement does not imply endorsement.
